4 SOLUTIONS FOR COMMON INTERIOR DESIGN MISTAKES!

Updated: Aug 5, 2018

There are some tips and tricks that anyone can do to enhance their living space and I cannot wait to share some with you! These little adjustments can actually make a big difference in your living space and… better yet, you would have learnt some valuable lessons that you can now apply to any space. People will soon begin to think that you are an interior designer!

So, as I said, let me begin to shine a little light on some small things that make a big impact.

4 SOLUTIONS FOR COMMON INTERIOR DESIGN MISTAKES!

#1 HANGING CURTAINS

Tip number one! When we dress our windows we tend to place the curtains directly above the window. What this does is make the window appear to be smaller than it is and it makes the ceiling look lower as well (like the pic on your left). What you want to do is hang the curtain rod as close to the ceiling as possible, this automatically makes the ceiling look higher (like the pic below to the right).

We also tend to to have the curtain rod be directly in line with the size of the window. This can actually hide some of the window and make it appear smaller. What you want to do is have between 10”-12” of overhang on each side of the window. This ensures the window is visible and it looks larger.

#2 RUG SIZE

This is another tip that will be helpful. When you are selecting a rug there are certain guidelines that you can use that will help you to pull that room together and find the best rug size for the space. One of the most common issues is having a rug that is way too small for the space.Rugs are popular in bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. The ideal rug size depends on the size of the room but if all of the furniture can sit on the top of your rug, that is what you want. If you can’t have that , then the rug should at least be halfway under some of the furniture. You can see the difference in rug sizes with the pics on the right as compared to those on the left. The bigger the better!

#3 JUST GO WITH THE FLOW

The flow of a room is another thing that can be easily missed. What do I mean by the flow of a room? When a home has a great flow, you can feel it. One room flows seamlessly into another. The kitchen is not far away from the dining area. The bedrooms are nicely placed at the most private side of the home etc. Good flow usually goes hand in hand with good design, which may be out of your control at the moment. However, each room can also have a good flow. When you enter a room, you should know the purpose of that space, you should also have great accessibility and room to maneuver within the space.

Here are some simple guidelines:

(A) foot traffic lanes should be 2 ft-3 ft apart.

(B) Space between a sofa and coffee table: 17"-20"

(C) Space between each dining room chair: 6"-12"

#4 EVERYTHING AGAINST THE WALL

This phenomenon is something that I witness more than I care to mention, in fact I have been guilty of it myself. We tend to place all of our furniture on the walls (like the pic on the left). Don’t get me wrong, some pieces belong there but you will be surprised at the difference a little space between your walls and the furniture makes. It actually warms up the space. For larger rooms , you can have as much as 3 ft or 36” between the wall and your furniture. Even in small spaces a little space between your furniture and the walls can make a difference.

Now you know some of the little tips that can actually change the way your space looks. Go on and get to it!
