HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PATIO...

Updated: Apr 7, 2018

When I look around my beautiful island that has 365 days of sunshine a year, there is one thing I cannot figure out. I see so many patios that are under utilised.

It’s as though a patio is just a common piece of architecture that many houses have but its just that, a style.

My question is this. Wouldn't you like to have an outdoor area that you can completely enjoy like an extension of one of the rooms in your home? Your own little slice of heaven. Somewhere you can relax, somewhere you can entertain, a quiet place to spend time on mornings or a place to wind down on evenings.

We have the perfect weather. Shouldn’t we make the most of it?

How can we achieve this, what can we do to make our patios more seductive? A place we can’t help but use because it just calls our name.

Well! They are several things we can do to create the perfect atmosphere. Let's begin with foliage!

FOLIAGE

Plants and patios are best friends, naturally! Plants automatically make the space relaxing and beautiful at the same time.

Plants can help you to create the perfect outdoor space, The bigger the patio, the larger the plants can be. If the patio is small, you should use smaller plants so that they do not take up too much space. Hang some up, place others on small tables, decorate them with some cute plant pots!

Not only are these living organisms attractive but they also have health benefits. They clean the air, reduce sounds, deter illness and boost healing. You really can’t go wrong with plants now, can you?

OPTIMIZE THAT SPACE!

Patios come in all shapes and sizes. What you want to do is make the most of that space. Since you already know that it will be an area of pure leisure, then you want the furniture to reflect that.

Small patios may only be able to accommodate maybe two or three small chairs but if that is the case, make them comfy and use a small side table that you can use for more plants or a place to rest things on.

If you have more space for a dining table and daybeds or hammocks, go for it! You just have to divide the patio into sections for dining and relaxation.

LIGHTING

Why not enjoy some outdoor night life in your own backyard? String some lights up, get some candles (preferably citronella), you can even get some tiki torches to create that special atmosphere. Who says you need a special occasion for special lighting. You are special enough.

You may not think that lights can have an effect on you but you would be surprised at how this feature will encourage you to go outside more and entertain more.

WELCOME NATURE IN

Invite some nature into your patio space. Whether it's a water distributor for hummingbirds, a bird feeder or a bird bath. I must say it is very relaxing to sit and observe these creatures.

Flowers will naturally invite more creatures in as well, butterflies, maybe even some not so friendly guest, like bees.

Let the wind sing to you with a wind chime. We all need some zen time. This is a sure way to make it happen. The sound of these instruments are so calming. Just imagine, you wouldn't need to go any further than your backyard for a tranquil experience, for free!!!!

CREATE A FEATURE

You can create a focal point if you wish. If you want to get real fancy, maybe a water feature. That will add to the ambiance and also provide some relaxing sounds.

You can also create a feature using plants. Either a vertical garden or just put a number of your best looking plants on display in a particular area. You will have something to show off to your guest! Keep them talking.

ENTERTAINING

This works best for larger patios, where you can have a separate dining space and a barbecue grill or even an outdoor kitchen. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors or entertain friends and family.

Smaller patios can still accommodate small tables and perhaps a small grill. Don’t forget your drinks. You can build in a cooler or just bring your own. The idea is having everything you will need on the outside.

We live in such a beautiful part of the world. I think we should make the most of it. Life is shorter than we think, so eat, drink and enjoy as much as you can. Utilise those patios, have friends and family over more often and embrace the outdoors!
