5 WAYS TO MODERNIZE YOUR UNUSED LIVING SPACE!!!

We have all seen it, some of us are guilty of it ourselves. Those rooms that you have preserved, Those rooms that no one uses but they are there to entertain “guest”. Some of us are also guilty of holding onto certain concepts. Some of these concepts have been passed on from one generation to the next; sometimes we even hear ourselves say “I had one of these growing up”. Does that make it relevant today? Most of the time, the answer is no!

Your home should be your haven. It should be beautiful yet functional and practical. It should reflect the personality of the person or family it belongs to and should cater to their needs the most. Life happens now! In the present, every moment is important and you and your family deserve to use the best as well.

Let’s look at some of these rooms and concepts and discover how you can make the most of the space you already have and maybe get rid of those things that are not really serving a purpose.

5 WAYS TO MODERNIZE YOUR UNUSED LIVING SPACE!!!

#1 DINING ROOMS

Separate dining room
Separate dining room

Yes, yes, it is true, fewer and fewer people are using dining rooms. The formal, individual dining room, where everyone sits and has breakfast and dinner everyday is slowly but surely becoming extinct. This is probably due to the busy lifestyles that both men and women now endure. Nowadays people tend to have kitchen bars and an open concept which eliminates a separate room for dining all together. The formal dining room is now used less which frees up some extra square footage that can be reused for something else, especially if the space is large.

You can decide what you want to use this space for but make sure it is useful. A gym? An office? A playroom? Maybe it can be divided into two rooms but the goal is to make it purposeful.

#2 CHINA CABINETS

Our beloved China cabinets are also an age old tradition that became popular at the beginning of the 20th century. The idea behind it was to showcase your very best dinnerware and to use them predominantly for guest and special occasions. Some of these beloved antiques are not only found in dining rooms but some may be found in living rooms or even hallways and the truth is, that most of the time the dishes found in these cabinets are never ever used. So I ask you this! Can these cabinets be more useful?

I believe these antique beauties can be put to better use. If you love books, it can become a nice way to showcase them, they can store wine or even use them in a baby nursery as a closet! So many different ways to re-purpose this old tradition.

#3 FORMAL LIVING ROOM

The formal living room. The room where you are not even allowed to sit on the chairs. Where nothing can be touched. You know the room I am talking about! I may ruffle a few feathers when I say this but I truly believe that these rooms are taking up space that can be used daily. Whether the room is large or small, this space can be used as an additional office, It can add more room to an already existing living area or even be turned into a playroom if you have kids or a man cave! Really and truly, it can be turned into whatever you want.

#4 PATIOS

Some of us simply do not use our patios. Your patio does not even have to be large to enjoy it. The key to an outdoor space, is to make it cozy and attractive. You have to create a space that you look forward to spending time in. You should be comfortable, it should be visually appealing and relaxing. I have dedicated a post to making the most of your patio space which can give you some more ideas by clicking here.

#5 BATHTUBS

You have to be really honest with yourself here. Do you use your bathtub? Some tubs that were installed around the 80's and 90's tend to be small in size, roughly around 5 ft but realistically it is quite hard to soak in this size tub. Which means that most of the time you take a shower and neglect the tub.

If you know you are guilty of this, then you should have a new modern shower. A new shower will also add value to your bathroom.

This also goes for people who may want to install large jacuzzi tubs. You have got to be honest with yourself and decide if you will make use of it, if you know you won't, you can save money and time and invest it elsewhere in your home. If you are a tub person, then by all means, enjoy yourself to the max!

Always think about how you and your family will make use of the space where you dwell. Think of the function and purpose and you can't go wrong!
