5 MUST ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE SELECTING YOUR BEDROOM COLOUR

Updated: May 31, 2018

Your bedroom is your very own personal sanctuary or at least it should be. This is where most people go to sleep, where they wake up, where they get themselves ready for the day and where they relax and lounge.

If you really think about it, this space can influence how you feel at the beginning and at the end of each day, so you should go to bed peacefully and wake up feeling your best!

It has been proven that colours have psychological effects and can affect your mood, so choosing a colour should be based on how you would like to feel.

5 MUST ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE SELECTING YOUR BEDROOM COLOUR

#1 HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL?

That's a good question that will help you to decide your colour. Would you like to feel peaceful and serene or are you the type of person who wakes up feeling energised and ready to take on the day?

Bright colours tend to make you feel more energised while light colours tend to be more soothing and calming.

Light soothing colours can be used all over your wall space. However, with brighter colours, I would recommend that you use them more sparingly. They tend to be so bright, that a little bit goes a long way. So! brightly coloured accessories, a brightly coloured accent wall, these are all great ways to infuse some bright colours into your room without any overkill.

#2 WILL YOU ENJOY SEEING IT EVERYDAY?

Remember! You wake up to this colour every single day. Therefore, you should have a good relationship with it. If you are unsure about what colours you would like to see everyday, then stay safe and go with neutrals. To find out more about neutral colours click here.

If you do decide to go with a bright colour and you want an accent wall, then I would suggest you place it on the wall behind the bed, that way, when you enter the room you see the colour but when you wake up, you don’t see it immediately.

The aim here is when you look at the colour of your room, you feel a sense of satisfaction. You notice the colour when you look at it and not the other way around, where you can not help but see it because it has stolen all of the attention away from the room.

#3 WILL IT FLOW WITH THE REST OF THE HOUSE?

Flowing with the rest of the house does not mean that every room has to be too matchy matchy or that the entire house has to be in one colour. It’s a good idea to use the same type of colours throughout your home. By the same type, I mean the same tones. If you are using earth tones, then continue to use earth tones for the entire design, if you like pastels, then you should continue to use them and this goes for light and neutral colours as well.

When it comes to bright colours, that’s where you have to be more cautious, a bright blue next to a bright orange can look more like a circus than a home. So it is nice to have pockets of bright colours and maybe bring it all together using a solid neutral colour.

#4 WILL IT COORDINATE WITH THE EXISTING STUFF IN YOUR ROOM?

If you are not beginning with a blank slate (a brand new house) then take a look at your existing furniture and try to use a colour that would complement what you already have.

If you have dark furniture, you should select a colour that will bring that out, I would suggest a lighter colour. If your furniture is light or even white, then you can use both dark colours and light colours. Darker colours will make your light furniture stand out more!

#5 ARE THERE MANY SHADES TO THE COLOUR?

Of course they are! You may have a colour in mind but you may be wondering whether that colour will look good on your walls. Even if the colour is your favourite colour (mine is purple) however, that does not mean that I would like my room to look like Barney the dinosaur exploded in it.

Certain colours may not look the best or would simply be too much. The good thing is, they are so many different shades to each colour that although you may love a colour you can have it shades darker or lighter, that way, it can work for you.

Look at it this way, it is up to you to create how you want to live and how you want to feel everyday. This is just a small step that can help you to achieve that.
